Finding Forrest

The wonderful thing about gaining wisdom through God’s Word is that you start to see Him in almost everything --- even in movies. One day, while folding laundry while watching Forrest Gump, something new caught my attention --- the relationship between Forrest and Jenny. Forrest’s love for Jenny is one of the purest portrayals of unconditional love in cinema, and though imperfect, it reflects God’s love for us in four ways.

1. Everlasting

From the moment Forrest met Jenny, his love for her never wavered. No matter how far she ran, how broken she became, or how often she rejected him, his love stayed steady. Similarly, God’s love for us never changes. When we drift away, He still is present, watching, and waiting. God’s faithfulness isn’t based on our behavior but on His divine nature. He is steadfast and merciful in His approach with His children. When we stumble, His grace holds us and when we forget Him, He still remembers us. His love isn’t conditional; it’s rooted in His promise.

2. Pure, Not Possessive

Forrest’s love wasn’t based on control, appearance, or what Jenny could give. It was pure. Jenny’s life was full of people who used her. Men wanted to possess her body but never understood her heart. Forrest’s love was different. He didn’t take from her; he gave to her. He didn’t demand love in return; he just loved. Possessive love consumes; pure love restores. Possessive love imprisons; pure love frees. Possessive love fades when rejected; pure love endures in silence.

Likewise, God’s love is pure and complete. It doesn’t depend on our status, position, or worthiness. He loves pastors just as much as prophets; evangelists just as much as teachers. He never forces himself on us or manipulates our will. Instead, He gently invites us; His love is freely given, never coerced. Divine love isn’t transactional but transformative. God doesn’t love us because He needs us; He loves us because He is love.

3. Presence

Throughout every season of Jenny’s life, her rebellion, success, and sickness, Forrest was there. He showed up quietly and faithfully, unconcerned with how others saw him. Forrest’s only desire was to care for Jenny. In the same way, God’s presence never leaves us. When we walk through dark valleys or make choices that break His heart, He remains near and ready to lead us back into His light.

4. Forgiving

Jenny’s life was filled with pain, poor choices, and running from love, but Forrest never held her past against her. He didn’t remind her of her mistakes or demand repayment for the wrongs. When Jenny finally returned home, he didn’t ask where she’d been; he loved her through it. That’s forgiveness in its purest form.

The same is true with God. His forgiveness doesn’t expose our failures; it erases them. His love is both forgiving and redemptive. It not only pardons our sins but restores what has been broken. When we fall, He accepts us, He calls us back. Through Christ’s sacrifice, we are invited into complete forgiveness and renewal. Redemption is His way of reclaiming His children and restoring us to a right relationship with Him.

The END

In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, Jenny tells Forrest, “You don’t know what love is.” But the truth is, he did. His love was everything God intended love to be: unconditional, selfless, enduring, decisive, and patient.
